The answer is of course, Yes! Should you pivot? That’s up to you but sometimes you don’t have a choice.
At the time of writing this the UK, and most of the world is in ‘Lockdown’ due to the COVID-19 virus and everyone has to stay at home and obey strict rules on ‘social distancing’. That means no shoots and therefore no income. The Government have put in place a payment support scheme for the self-employed which has been forecast for June which is great and will help ease some financial stresses that I’m sure every self-employed person is feeling right now but… It’s the 1st of April! What do we do for the next 2 months?
Well, as the title suggests I’m pivoting! I’m proud to announce that I’m now going to start webcamming in my speedos! £20 a show! Of course, that’s an April Fools joke. I’ve been doing that for years! Kidding again! No one would pay to see that haha! Anyway, I digress…?
Pivoting! Right, first what is pivoting? Well for me as a photographer and creative-minded person in means pivoting my field of focus. So to pivot in this sense involves shifting your focus from one discipline or field to another. I can’t shoot right now so I’ve been trying to work out ways that I can pivot as a photographer and still earn some sort of income, while things are so up in there air and no one really seems to know when some form of normality will resume. It’s pretty tough though but I’m digging in and seeing what comes up! So far I’ve got a few things up my sleeve none of which involve a webcamming or speedos (fingers crossed it stays that way). Hence why this is a short blog post as I’ve been busy trying to work on them so I can tell you more!
It’s also crazy how some things just seem to happen at the right time too. I was listening to Dan Kennedy, who is an incredible celebrity portrait photographer, interview John Wright, an equally awesome photographer, on his podcast just the other day. Pivoting was a massive theme! John is a photographer who has made many pivots in his career so hearing about them all and how he has made the work is hugely inspiring and came at exactly the right time for me! I will include links to the podcast and also to John’s website as well as both photographers are well worth checking out and Dan’s podcasts are brilliantly interesting.
Anyway, what about you? How are you keeping yourself busy and creative in these crazy times? I’d love to hear from you. Reach out, say hello! I’d love to start some conversations with fellow creatives in the same boat! Let’s face it we’re all in this together right now!
In the meantime, let’s hope my ‘pivoting’ works out a little better than on ‘Friends’! I will keep you all posted! Made me chuckle seeing this again and we all need some smiles right now! See you next week!
