Taking a break from things is not the worst idea from time to time, even when you’re a workaholic like me! I was only talking to someone the other day about work-life balance or my lack thereof! I don’t really have that balance as if I’m honest I very rarely switch off. My job is also my passion and my creative brain runs wild most of the time with ideas and new ways to create or take my business forward. To most people that might sound like a nightmare, not being able to switch off that is, but because I love what I do I don’t really think about it too much until it’s brought to my attention by others!

I turned to social media for some inspiration and asked my Instagram followers for some possible blog topics this week and this is what they wanted to find out a little more about, ‘My morning routine’. Find out how using the ‘5 Second Rule’ and Bobby Mcferrin and his 80s track ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ help me get up in the morning…

So back in June of 2018, I decided I was going to revisit a project that I did back when I was at university. It was a classic university/college project and the first project of my second year, way back in 2003 (that’s a long time ago!). The self-portrait!

Earlier in the year, I was asked back, for a second time, by the team at the Midland Fashion Awards to judge their Emerging Fashion Photographer 2019 category. The competition level was extremely high and after selecting 3 finalists and some serious deliberation I chose Lee Leyland as the overall winner…

I don’t have time! It’s a classic excuse and one that we’ve all used at some point or other I’m sure. Sometimes maybe it’s true but maybe at other times, not so much! We all have those things that we put off or don’t do under the guise of not having enough time in our busy lives, don’t we?

This week I was asked by a number of followers on social media, how I made this little GIF that I posted last week. This isn’t something that I plan on doing a lot of as there are tutorials aplenty all over the internet but in the spirit of new realms for the blog, I thought I would do a simple ‘How to…’ to answer the question…

I’m going to be honest and say that I’m pretty behind the times and I’ve only just discovered podcasts. That’s not to say that I didn’t know that they existed, it’s just that I’d never really listened to many. 6 or 7 months ago I found a couple that were great and since then I’ve been consuming more and more podcasts and finding that they’re a great source of inspiration. I thought I would share a few of my favourites with you. Hopefully you can get some value from them just like I have…

I was asked recently by one of the blog readers, to do a little bit more behind the scenes stuff and to also explain how some of the images are created. So I thought I would use these recent portraits and go into a little more detail about how they were done…

I set myself a target of one blog post a week for a year! I’m nearly halfway through and I’ll be honest, it’s quite a task. There are so many different elements to being a self-employed professional photographer that take priority and the blog can feel like a weight around the neck some weeks…

So I promised myself that when I started the blog that I would use it to share all of my creative work, not just my photography. With that in mind and with a little trepidation, this is a simple poem that I created with a little imagination and some marker pens!
This is something I do from time to time to stay creative and to occasionally spark some new ideas or inspiration that might translate into an image of some sort later down the line. It’s a simple but effective technique…

This week there has been so much going on, and I will be honest and say that my brain has been filled with jobs, post-production, meetings, ideas and life away from photography. It’s been hard to focus my brain on just one thing especially the blog! Even now I am sat here being distracted from writing by messages about a job tomorrow and emails from clients wanting to book in pre-production calls. So ironically this blog post is about some simple things that I do to try and stay focused! Hang on there’s the phone….
Sorry about that! Interestingly though it does segway nicely into my first tip on staying focused…

In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what kind of photographer you are, whether you're a commercial photographer, a portrait photographer, a fashion photographer or even a hobbyist photographer it doesn’t matter, I would always recommend working on personal projects.
When you work in the photography industry, especially in advertising, you can often find yourself…

Every now and then, in any creatives life, we experience that ‘creative block’. Some of us more than others. It’s just not flowing or you’ve lost some of that passion that you once had for the medium that you love so much! Don’t worry, it happens to everyone, even the greatest artists throughout history I would guess. Now, I am most certainly not one of the greatest artists in history, but this is where I also found myself recently… in ‘Creative Nowhere Land’!
