So I’ve done it! A year of blogging! 1 blog a week for 52 weeks! I’ve just gone back and re-read the very first blog post and I’m reflecting on the year of blogging and some of the things that I’ve learnt as a result!

That’s right her name isn’t Polly it’s actually Maria, but Maria is wearing some beautiful Pretty Polly lingerie (https://www.prettypolly.co.uk/) in the shots so you can see how I got the title right? Look, it’s not as easy as you might think coming up with titles for the blogs every week you know haha!
Anyway, it’s been a busy couple of weeks with lots going on and this week has been no different. It seems to be the week for lingerie though as on Monday I was up at INDX Lingerie Show seeing some of my lovely clients and meeting some potential new clients (fingers crossed)…

Have you got the January blues? I hope not as it’s only really the first week back into it! If it’s that bad already then I would suggest some sort of career change maybe? And if it is that bad you will hate me haha, I’m that annoying guy and I’ve been itching to get back to work. This week I have a couple of shoots, with new clients, to start the year in a positive manner!

This week I was asked by a number of followers on social media, how I made this little GIF that I posted last week. This isn’t something that I plan on doing a lot of as there are tutorials aplenty all over the internet but in the spirit of new realms for the blog, I thought I would do a simple ‘How to…’ to answer the question…

DON’T PIGEONHOLE YOURSELF! In your work life, personal life whatever it is! No one thing defines you! You are not just your job title or your gender or your race etc. We are all unique and complex human beings capable of all sorts of wonderful things so experience them and learn as much as you can. Know yourself and evolve with that. Be as many different things as you want to be because life is short!

Now, it might not look like it from this picture but this man was, and quite possibly still is, a lethal weapon. This is Andy Powell and Andy is an ex elite SAS soldier. I was asked to shoot some portraits of Andy for giffgaff a couple of months ago and I have been meaning to share a little more about the shoot. Andy is now a very successful businessman and was invited into giffgaff HQ to talk about his inspiring story to the company…

I was asked recently by one of the blog readers, to do a little bit more behind the scenes stuff and to also explain how some of the images are created. So I thought I would use these recent portraits and go into a little more detail about how they were done…

I set myself a target of one blog post a week for a year! I’m nearly halfway through and I’ll be honest, it’s quite a task. There are so many different elements to being a self-employed professional photographer that take priority and the blog can feel like a weight around the neck some weeks…

The Rugby World Cup 2019, in Japan, has kicked off! As I write this, it’s a rainy Sunday morning in the UK and I’m sat in front of the TV watching England play their opening game against Tonga. How’s that for multi-tasking? Blogging while enjoying my Sunday…

It’s 2019 and mental illness, depression, stress and anxiety are all on the increase. There’s been a whole heap of studies done that have linked high levels of social media use with these higher levels of depression, stress and anxiety. High levels of social media use? That’s most people these days isn’t it? I read recently that a ‘normal’ person will spend, on average, at least 2 hours a day on social media! That seems high to me but then again I’m not ‘normal’ and I know that some people spend even longer on it all. So have we got a problem? Is the way we live our modern lives affecting how we see ourselves and our self-worth and is social media tearing us apart?

‘What do you desire? What makes you itch?’
I was lucky! From a young age I always knew that I wanted to do something creative! I found my passion for photography and I’m now extremely fortunate to be able to do something that I love so much as my job/career. This isn’t me boasting! As any self-employed person, especially in the creative industry, knows, it’s not always easy for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes we all need a little bit of motivation. I know I do!

I over-complicate these blog posts I think! Sometimes it should just be about sharing a portrait full of genuine emotion!
There are lots of technical elements to portrait photography, some of them easier to get to grips with than others but once you’ve got that bit covered it comes down to you and the subject in front of your camera. The best portraits, for me personally, are created when you capture a feeling of genuine emotion. So here’s one I made earlier…

Short and sweet blog post this week!
So I haven’t tested in ages! Testing, if you don’t know, is basically a collaboration between creatives. Generally, no one is being paid but it’s a time where we can experiment with ideas and concepts, whether they are mine or another member of the team, and see what comes up.
Last week I shared some images from one of my ideas from the test shoot, called ‘Newspeak’, make sure you check out the last blog if you haven’t already! This week I thought I would share the images that, my loyal makeup artist, Gaby Hunt wanted to create from our test…

I don’t know about anyone else but I love seeing a little of the behind the scenes action that goes into making an image. I follow a couple of big advertising and celebrity photographers online, who openly share their behind the scenes shots and a break down of how the shot was achieved including the equipment they used to get the shot. For this blog post, I thought I might follow suit and deconstruct one of my own shots from a client shoot for Anita Lingerie in Germany…
Read MoreCreative Nowhere Land Blog - Staying focused!
This week there has been so much going on, and I will be honest and say that my brain has been filled with jobs, post-production, meetings, ideas and life away from photography. It’s been hard to focus my brain on just one thing especially the blog! Even now I am sat here being distracted from writing by messages about a job tomorrow and emails from clients wanting to book in pre-production calls. So ironically this blog post is about some simple things that I do to try and stay focused! Hang on there’s the phone….
Sorry about that! Interestingly though it does segway nicely into my first tip on staying focused…

I have a heavy heart this week! My dear friend Bob sadly had to say goodbye to his best friend and canine companion of 12 years, Skip. Skip passed away early on Friday morning with Bob by his side as he had always been. If you have read my previous blog post about these two characters, ‘This is Bob…’ you may understand why this loss is so painful for Bob and anyone that ever crossed paths with Skip. Bob is obviously heartbroken but staying positive as Bob always does!

‘The newest Islander to arrive on Love Island is…’
No not really! But you were nearly had you right?
This blog post actually has nothing to do with Love Island apart from the fact that during a recent shoot, with Danni W from RMG Models, we created some shots that, the whole team joked, looked like Love Island promo images…

If you have followed me for a while on social media you may already know the story of Bob and Skip. I met Bob in 2015 when I had a photography studio in Birmingham, United Kingdom. This is the story of how we met one another and the Facebook post that I shared in June of the same year (with Bobs permission of course)…
‘This is Bob…
Bob is not an alcoholic, Bob is not a drug addict but Bob does live on the streets!!
I met Bob a couple of weeks ago in Birmingham while he was sat, with his trusty sidekick, Skip, reading his book in the sunshine…
Read MoreCreative Nowhere Land - The Great British Break Up!
A completely different style of blog post this week. ‘The Great British Break Up’ is a selection of images and pieces of writing that I felt captured the mood, and feeling of the people around me as I wandered the streets of grey, East London with my camera. I wanted to try and create a story or narrative around the moments that I shot, and with everything going on here in the UK, a ‘Break Up’ seemed very fitting…

It’s going to be another short blog post this week in comparison to last weeks lengthy number. I have been in London working, for the early part of the week, so time has been a little limited, especially for thinking about and composing another blog post. With that being said, here is what I came up with at short notice…
I’m keeping it nice and simple again this week! I thought I would simply share some of my favourite images from a recent lingerie shoot with, the lovely…
